Meet Benny!!

Benny is a sweet, lovable, and obedient lab who almost did not get the chance for a happy life.  You see, when Benny was around a year old, he found himself in a local animal shelter.  Although Benny was only a puppy, he was scheduled to be euthanized because of overcrowding.  The shelter contacted STLRR and begged the nice volunteers save Benny's life.  The shelter told the rescue volunteers how sweet and lovable Benny is and how he looked up with sad but hopeful eyes every time someone walked by his kennel -- as if he were waiting for his owners to come back and save him from this cruel fate.  Luckily, the STLRR volunteers saved Benny.  Unfortunately, Benny had a second brush with death around a month later.  Benny developed a skin condition, which his regular vet thought was some sort of bacterial infection.  Benny needed to see a dog dermatologist.  Most rescues probably would not have been in a position to spend extra funds for a dog dermatologist and would have put Benny to sleep, but once again STLRR came to Benny's rescue.  Luckily, Benny did not have a bacterial infection, and his condition is now fully controlled with an allergy pill once a day, which Benny will happily gobble up with a little peanut butter.

Benny is an absolutely great and fun young dog who is full of potential, but unfortunately no one has given him a chance because of his medical autoimmune condition, histiocytosis. However, Benny is lucky because his condition is treatable, we already paid to have Benny treated by the best specialists in Houston for this condition, which is chronic but under control, with inexpensive steriods.  Occasionally Benny's eyes get a little red and swollen from his condition at which time his steriod dose needs to be increased a little - but that is really the only outward sign of the disorder he has.  We have had Benny for over two years now and he's been doing great so we feel confident about his future.  And don't worry about the steriods - he does not have any adverse reactions or aggression with them (they're not like human steriods used by bodybuilders). Rather, he just drinks a little more water than other dogs when his dosage is increased.

Benny  is house- and crate trained. Benny's former foster home included two Labs and he got along great with them. However, he should not go to a home with cats.

Please consider meeting Benny - you will be happy you did.
